These pages are the terms FaultLab runs on. They say in plain words what the site does and what we keep; when the site changes, they change with it, and the date below says when.

Terms of use

FaultLab™ is the property of Petty Motorworks, Waretown, New Jersey · Last updated 20 October 2026

What FaultLab is

FaultLab is diagnostic training: practice cases, the FaultLab Guide, ASE study material, the Technician Path and shop tools, made by Petty Motorworks (“the shop”, “we”). By creating an account or using FaultLab you agree to these terms.

The cases are training scenarios. Some are built from the shop’s real jobs and say so; the rest are made up and say so. None of it is a manufacturer’s service procedure or specification. Always follow the service information for the vehicle in front of you, and work safely.

FaultLab is not affiliated with or endorsed by ASE. Its study notes and practice questions are written by the shop; they are not ASE test questions, and passing them is not a certification.

Your account

Sign-in is handled by an outside sign-in service (Auth0), which keeps your password; we never see it. An account is for one person. Keep your sign-in to yourself: sharing an account, or letting others use a paid copy, is not allowed.

You must be at least 13 to use FaultLab. If you are under 18, use it with the permission of a parent, guardian or your school or apprenticeship program.

Paid plans and billing

The price and billing interval are shown before you pay. Payments are taken by Stripe on its own secure page; we never see your card number.

A paid plan renews automatically at the end of each period until you cancel. You can cancel at any time from your account page (Manage billing). If you cancel, you keep paid access through the date you have paid to, and you are not charged again.

If a payment fails, you keep paid access for 7 days from the first failure while Stripe retries. After that, the account drops to a free membership until the payment goes through.

Founding prices, while they are offered, are kept for as long as that subscription continues. If the subscription ends, a new one is at the price at that time.

We may change prices. A change will not apply to you until we have told you about it and you have had the chance to cancel before your next renewal.

Refunds follow the refund policy.

Ask the Shop (the Pro plan)

Pro members, and teams on a shop package that includes questions, can send the shop real jobs and get written answers. The number of questions each calendar month (New Jersey time) is shown on the Ask the Shop page; a team’s questions are shared by everyone in it, and unused questions do not carry over. Pro seats are limited.

An answer is training guidance based only on what you send. It is not a repair authorization, a warranty or a replacement for the manufacturer’s service information. The shop cannot see or test the vehicle, and you, or the shop you work for, decide what work is done and are responsible for it.

Send only what you have the right to share, and leave out your customer’s name, address, phone number and other personal details. You keep ownership of what you send. You allow the shop to store it and use it to answer you. The shop will turn a job into a training case only if you ticked the box that allows it, and only after removing anything that identifies you or the customer.

Shop packages

When a shop or training program buys seats, its owners can see each member technician’s finished cases and outcomes, ASE practice scores by area, Technician Path sign-offs, Circuit Lab challenges solved, best Virtual Shop scores and time on FaultLab, and can replay the steps each technician took on the cases and Virtual Shop jobs they finish, and the shop’s leaderboard shows each member’s name, points, tier and time to everyone in the shop unless an owner turns it off. You are told this before you join with the shop’s code, and you can leave the shop at any time, which deletes the progress kept for it.

Using the content

FaultLab, its cases, the Guide, the study notes, the practice questions, the Virtual Shop, Circuit Labs, the drawings and the waveform pictures are © 2026 Petty Motorworks, all rights reserved. While your account is open, you may use them for your own training. You may not copy, resell, republish or share them, including by screenshots, screen recordings or photos of the screen passed to others, scrape the site, or use them to build another product.

Paid copies show a faint mark with your account’s email and the date across the screen, so that a copy passed around can be traced to the account it came from. The mark is drawn on your own screen; it is not sent anywhere.

Do not try to get around the sign-in, the paid access checks or the limits, and do not upload anything harmful.

Ending an account

You can stop using FaultLab at any time, and ask us to close your account (see the privacy notice). We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, for example by sharing paid access.

No warranty, and limits on liability

FaultLab is provided as it is. We work to keep it accurate, but training material can contain mistakes, and vehicles differ. To the extent the law allows, the shop is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for damage to vehicles, equipment or people from work done on a vehicle, and our total liability to you is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.

The law that applies, and changes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Jersey. We may update them; the date at the top shows the latest version, and we will tell members about a change that matters before it applies.

Questions about these terms: use the contact address the shop will list here.
